Free 2 Be A Kid - Clothing Collection

I would like to share with you a great thing that my Medical Technologies and Health Careers classes have done recently with our community.

The ROP Medical Pathway students at Harbor High thought it would be rewarding to participate in Operation Christmas Child and show how much we care for these children even though we do not know them or know where the gifts would be going.

The students gathered toys, art supplies, toiletries and much more that would fit in a shoe box, these items were presented to Emily Dore for distribution and will soon be on their way to some very special children. I am so proud of my students, they have such empathy and compassion for others.

Students in the Medical Pathway Magnet Course come to Harbor High from the following High Schools in the county: San Lorenzo Valley, Scotts Valley, Soquel,Santa Cruz, Delta, Cypress, Coast Redwood, Costanoa and the ARK schools.

Many thanks go to ROP Instructor Donna Marie Stahl and all the students for volunteering their time and collecting donations.

Free 2 Be A Kid

Free 2 Be A Kid is a local children's clothing exchange. Our goal is to provide support to children and families in our community. We offer a monthly even in which families may attend and acquire the clothing, shoes, toys, books and any other baby or child related supplies they need. Our theme is "Bring what you can. Take what you need". There is no requirement for bringing in donations and there is no limit of what a family can take.

We aim to provide a clean and safe environment in which families in the Santa Cruz community can make donations of children’s items and know that they will be lovingly distributed to other families in the same community. We also make ourselves available to foster families and in emergency situations as a relief source. Free 2 Be A Kid is deeply committed to volunteer projects. Our yearly projects include Operation Christmas Child, Santa Crus Adopt A Family Project, the polar plunge for the Special Olympics and twice a year blood drives for the American Red Cross.

Our physical exchange happens monthly, the first Saturday of the month, at the Santa Cruz Live Oak Grange Hall from 9:30 am to 11:30 am. We are 100% volunteer run. Any further questions can be answered through our Facebook page, Free 2 Be A Kid Santa Cruz, or on our website at

Operation Christmas Child

Operation Christmas Child is a world-wide organization that provides Christmas boxes to children all over the world. Through this organization, groups and individuals receive empty shoe boxes to fill with toys and hygiene items to send to these children. This is our opportunity to show these children that we love them and that people from the other side of the globe care about them and want happiness for them. Many of these kids have never owned their own bar of soap, tooth brush, or a toy of their own. The shoe boxes are distributed yearly in October and returned to a collection center during National Collection Week, November 14-21. They are then delivered all over the globe to children between the ages of 2 and 14.

Perhaps this can be seen as our opportunity to bring joy to the lives of children living in some of the worlds harshest situations. More information can be found at
